The dolphins and whales sighting is among the incredible activities that the Ligurian Sea offers to its visitors.  This area is the heart of the Cetacean Sanctuary, established in 1991 and based on a project dated back to the late 1970s. The protected marine area covers about 100 thousand square kilometers and includes the waters of Toulon, on the French coast, Capo Falcone and Capo Ferro, respectively in western and eastern Sardinia, and Fosso Chiarone in Tuscany. It goes without saying that Liguria is its heartbeat.

Thanks to specific whalewatching initiatives, there are several chances of catching sight of cetaceans in their natural habitat. Besides, from spring to fall our region offers the possibility of taking part in special boat trips where the sighting experience is enhanced by the presence onboard of a marine biologist. From the eastern to the western riviera, you just have to choose a port of departure to live your whalewatching experience:Camogli, Genova, Varazze, Savona, Loano, Andora, Laigueglia, Bordighera, Sanremo and Imperia offer offshore trips, which are often one day-long itineraries. Patience is an essential tool, but the recurring sightings worth the wait.
