At the foot of the Ligurian Alps, the homeland of the astronomer of the Sun King, the village of sundials and natural tastes

From this natural balcony your sight will be ravished by the green and silver of the centuries-old olive groves, and by the strips of brooms, mimosas and vineyards that go down to the sea.

Here there is a famous Astronomic Observatory, in honour of Gian Domenico Cassini, who was born precisely at Perinaldo, and where you can make night-time observations together with an astronomer. We are in the village of protected-origin-denomination extra virgin olive oil and the Perinaldo artichoke, a Slow Food Presidium.

The artichoke typical of Perinaldo was imported from Provence in the Napoleonic age; it is without thorns and tender and grows almost as a wild vegetable. It is picked in May and June.

On the second Sunday of May there is the “Rassegna gastronomica del carciofo di Perinaldo e dell’olio extravergine di oliva taggiasca” (Gastronomic Festival of the Perinaldo artichoke extra virgin olive oil from Taggia): in the streets of the village a market of fresh produce is held and you can taste the artichoke cooked according to the traditional recipes. Other specialities of the tradition are “meesana” (stuffed pumpkin flowers, served as a warm appetizer), rabbit Ligurian style, stockfish prepared with protected-origin-denomination oil and “olive taggiasche” (olives from Taggia): all accompanied by a glass of controlled-origin-denomination Rossese di Dolceacqua. The village preserves one of the most charming and best preserved historic areas in the Imperia hinterland. On the façades of the buildings sundials stand out. A must is the San Nicola da Bari parish church, built in 1489, inside which there is a 15th-century wooden crucifix and one of the most beautiful organs in the hinterland of the eastern Riviera, made in 1829.
