Eight hamlets on hillsides overlooking the sea, once the horizon of pirate wars. A panorama coloured by the blue flowers of local artichokes

Amongst suggestive crops of artichokes, not far from Sanremo, with all the flavour of stories linked to pirates. You can still feel that atmosphere of wars and passions as you stroll along the ancient alleys and look upwards: you’ll see the high guard walls once used as a defence against the Barbary pirates. Under the historical “Barbary tower” of Pianei, now an Ethnographic museum, you can breathe in crisp air amongst the handicraft and coffee shops. Outdoor trips are just as pleasant and sometimes surprising; amongst the oaks, brooms and pines you might even come across the large ocellated lizard (Lacerta lepida), that can grow more than 60 cm long.
