Santa Margherita Ligure

A pearl of the Eastern Riviera a stone’s throw from Portofino, where tourism is synonymous with elegance. For gourmets it is the home of famous prawns

At “Santa” elegant buildings welcome you with splendid trompe l’oeil and roads with admirable risseu in the streets of the centre, with numerous boutiques selling famous brands. It is one of the capitals of tourism and also of gastronomy, thanks to a natural gift: the red prawns of Santa Margherita, which you find at all eating places with a view of the sea. Welcoming tourists belongs to the history of the place: there are numerous high-level hotels, suited both for holidays and for the organization of conferences.

The harbour at Santa is a stone’s throw from the centre and welcomes pleasure boats, fishing boats and big boats for splendid sea trips. The beaches are well equipped and a free beach for dogs also exists.
A must is a visit to Villa Durazzo-Centurione, two villas and a big seventeenth-century park in which there is an interesting Italian-style garden with risseu; to Santa Margherita Ligure Castle near the waterfront (1550); and the old Cervara Abbey, a 1361 monastic complex sheer over the sea with splendid English-style gardens, today privately owned.
In the direction of Portofino, visit the bay of Paraggi with a well-equipped beach and crystalline waters surrounded by rich vegetation. For diving lovers we recommend a dive here among splendid seabeds and the wreck of a ship sunk in 1917.
