It is a tourist and agricultural town, famous for its ancient history, going back to the Roman epoch, and for sending to people’s tables three of the best Ligurian products: the Albenga purple asparagus, a slow food presidium, the Albenga artichoke, and the ox-heart tomato.

Walking along the streets of the historic area you still glimpse the old ring of walls. If you move inside, you rediscover the main streets that traced out its layout and historical vestiges like the baptistery from the early Christian epoch.

But above all, arriving from the sea or from the Via Aurelia from a distance you recognize the medieval towers, which rise up against the sky. In one of these there is the Albenga Civic Museum (Museo civico di Albenga). Albenga appears like a peninsula: the estuary of the river Centa projects it towards the sea and makes it a springboard. On windy days the bay that opens up on Gallinara island is ideal for those who love surfing. Off it a Roman cargo ship was found and the vases recovered are kept at the Roman Naval Museum (Museo Navale Romano).

Alongside the traces of history, you can enjoy the wonders of the Coast: long beaches of golden sand, restaurants that serve good fresh fish, and eating and drinking places to enjoy your summer evenings.

Albenga, with its hamlet Salea and its hinterland, is also one of the capitals of controlled-origin-denomination wine: Pigato wine is made here, an ideal accompaniment for a fish-based dish. To Pigato and other controlled-origin-denomination wines from Liguria the annual festival held at Salea is devoted.
