On one side there is the airport and on the other fields cultivated with the famous violet and in between a medieval village to be visited. This is Villanova d’Albenga. The layout of the village dates from 1200. It was founded by Albenga to control access from the hinterland, and walking in its caruggi (alleys) you will realize that little has changed in the polygonal urbanistic structure. The walls still preserve ten crenellated towers and surround a large part of the village.

At the centre of the village the medieval well has become the symbol of the village. It was in use until the thirties, when it gave the inhabitants drinking water; the buckets and chains of the period are still preserved. An interesting feature from the same epoch is provided by two churches: Santa Maria del Soccorso, called “The Round One”, and Santo Stefano di Cavatorio. The Clemente Panero airport connects Villanova d’Albenga and the Western Riviera with the whole of Italy and Europe for those who have private planes. Nearby there is the Racecourse of Flowers, where trotting and galloping races are held and you can take lessons in American-style riding, as well as making excursions in the hinterland. In the outskirts there is the botanical treasure of the famous violets only cultivated here and picked between the end of October and the end of March. With the petals confectioners in Savona and Genoa make juicy jams and preserves as well as the traditional candied violets.
